Dental Filling

Dental Filling

Dental filling is the process of restoring a damaged tooth, caused by factors such as decay or fracture, to its original appearance and function.

Not every cavity on the teeth that is not in the process of decay needs to be filled. However, if a decaying tooth is left untreated, bacteria can progress to the deeper layers of the tooth, leading to infection of the pulp chamber.

How is Dental Filling Done?

The procedure is usually performed in a single session and involves the removal of decay and placement of dental filling material into the resulting cavity. Most materials, except for composites, mechanically bond to the tooth, requiring small preparations to ensure sufficient retention.

Generally, a dental filling is done as follows:

The dentist numbs your tooth with an appropriate local anesthesia method. Using high and low-speed dental instruments, the dentist removes the decay from the tooth. To prevent contact with saliva and moisture, cotton or plastic protective barriers called rubber dams are placed around the tooth, and the tooth surface is gently dried. If the decay is deep, protective agents are applied over the pulp of the tooth to prevent sensitivity to hot and cold stimuli. Composite fillings bond to the tooth through a mechano-chemical process. To achieve this bond, a liquid bonding agent containing low-concentration acid and adhesive is applied to the tooth surface. A blue light is used to cure and harden the applied bonding agent and composite filling material. After the bonding agent is applied, the filling material is placed in layers of 1.5 - 2 mm and hardened with the blue light. Excess material and areas creating high spots are trimmed to ensure proper alignment with opposing and neighboring teeth. Finally, the newly placed dental filling is polished to complete the procedure. If you wish to improve your dental aesthetics due to gaps between your teeth, aesthetic anterior tooth fillings may be the treatment you are looking for.
